Queer Folk’s Tales – LGBTQ+ Storytelling Nights

Scottish Storytelling Centre kick off Year of Stories 2022 with new series of
LGBTQ+ storytelling evenings, Queer Folks’ Tales, hosted by drama producer
Turan Ali and featuring celebrated writers Val McDermid, Jo Clifford.

Queer Folks’ Tales is a new, bi-monthly storytelling evening, starting on March 3rd
2022, presented by the Scottish Storytelling Centre. This series is the start of the
Scottish Storytelling Centre’s celebrations for Scotland’s Year of Stories 2022.

Hosted by stage storyteller and producer of BBC drama Turan Ali, the evenings
will have a mix of well known and new LGBTQ+ storytellers from Edinburgh and
around Scotland. Already confirmed to be part of the series of events is celebrated
Scottish crime writer Val McDermid, Edinburgh stand-up comedian Bruce Devlin
and trans playwright Jo Clifford.

Each evening will see four storytellers perform two stories each, ensuring a wide
variety of styles and experiences. The line-up for March 3rd includes prized resident
MC of Edinburgh’s Stand comedy club, Bruce Devlin, writer & psychologist Z.K.
Abraham, Scottish novelist and short story writer Ely Percy (their two acclaimed
novels are “Vicky Romeo Plus Joolz” (2019) and “Duck Feet” (2021) and drama and
comedy producer/director/writer Turan Ali.

The idea started with the first Queer Folks’ Tales evening last October as part of
the Scottish International Storytelling Festival. The evening was a sell-out success
and Edinburgh City Council has since funded the five evenings happening this
year on March 3rd, May 5th, July 7th, September 8th and November 10th.

The evenings are co-produced by TRACS (Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland)
and Edinburgh production company Bona Broadcasting Ltd.

Turan Ali says: “Many of the stories told in the Queer Folks’ Tales evenings are
true stories of LGBTQ+ experience in Scotland today. Sometimes hilarious, often
moving, occasionally shocking, the mix of stories across the year is going to be as
varied as the range of storytellers we are inviting. We will have household names
involved as well as new and diverse queer storytellers from the different
communities of Scotland. I am delighted that queer stories are going to be a
regular part of the programme at Scotland’s national storytelling centre.”
