Fringe 2018: Q&A with Puppet State Theatre Company on The Man Who Planted Trees

How would you describe your show in one sentence?

An inspiring, comical, multi-sensory adaptation of Jean Giono’s classic environmental tale.

Is this a new show or have you performed it elsewhere?

We have been performing it for 13 years now and recently passed 1700 performances, appearing all over the UK and North America, with return visits to New Zealand and Australia.

Is this your first visit to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

This will be our 10th year performing the show at the Storytelling Centre

How many times have you performed at the Fringe before?

For Richard 25 times and for Rick not far short of that.

What’s your favourite thing about the Fringe?

Being a small part of such a huge event.

How have you been preparing for the Fringe? How has the show developed/changed since your original idea?

Because the show is partially improvised, every performance is different, but basically, it’s the same show. We never want to stray far from Jean Giono’s original story.

What do you think sets your show apart from all the other Festival offerings?

It is probably one of the most often performed shows at the Fringe. People tend to come back again and again (the record is apparently 17 times).

What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Fringe?

Mairi Campbell’s Auld Lang Syne and Rick Conte’s The Time Machine

If your show was a place in Edinburgh, which place would it be and why?

The Greyfriars Bobby statue. (It’s that Dog again!)
