Fringe 2018: Q&A with The Scientific Romance Theatre Company on The Time Machine

How would you describe your show in one sentence?

The Scientific Romance Theatre Company present HG Wells’ chilling classic -The Time Machine!

Is this a new show or have you performed it elsewhere?

This show had its world premiere in February at the SSC.  It then went on to tour Scotland and is due to tour the UK in Spring 2019 and China this January.

Is this your first visit to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

Rick Conte has been performing at the Fringe for decades; you may know him as the man behind the dog in The Man Who Planted Trees.

Matt Ruskin also has vast experience of the Edinburgh Fringe.  In fact, Matt was the founding father and compare of the legendary Bongo Club Cabaret from 1998.

Debs Arnott is an actor extraordinaire, receiving nominations and winning awards for her performances at the Fringe, dating back further than it is polite to mention.

How many times have you performed at the Fringe before?

The three of us average about 20 Fringes each!

What’s your favourite thing about the Fringe?

We love having so many shows in a row so that we can fine tune it and make it as fun and exciting to ourselves and our audience as possible.  Also, I know from experience that the Scottish Storytelling Centre is the BEST venue in Edinburgh!  (we feel very lucky to perform there)

How have you been preparing for the Fringe? How has the show developed/changed since your original idea?

Since our Scottish tour we have been making some elements of the show (like the effect of the matches underground, for instance) more satisfying for the audience.  (those Morlocks and Elon!)

What do you think sets your show apart from all the other Festival offerings?

This particular work by Wells is often cited as one for the first Science Fiction stories; and it is. Written in 1893 it is also a cautionary tale about what happens to mankind when there is such extreme wealth discrepancy in the world.  This is very relevant today.

And we make it funny.

What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Fringe?

I always try to catch the other shows on at SSC.  And anything by Andy Cannon.

If your show was a place in Edinburgh, which place would it be and why?

It would be the SSC because of it’s rich past and promising future; it’s like a Time Machine!
