So many people say they’d love to be a published magazine writer but
aren’t sure how to get started.

“The People’s Friend” short story writing workshops give writers the chance to learn from the experts and
develop their skills, with hands-on exercises and advice.

Led by “The People’s Friend” Fiction Editor Shirley Blair, who can call on more than
40 years’ experience in magazine fiction, the day covers writing for the
“Friend”, finding inspiration and developing ideas, creating strong
characters, structuring your story, and practical tips.

  • 10am:           Tea/coffee and introductions
  • 10.30am:      Talk: Shirley Blair on writing for the “Friend”
  • 11.30 am:     Tea/coffee break
  • 11.45 am:     Talk: guest author – Kate Blackadder, a regular writer for “The People’s Friend” – on where to find inspiration and how to develop ideas
  • 12.30pm:     Exercise: Themes
  • 1pm – 2pm:  Lunch
  • 2pm:            Exercise: Creating strong characters
  • 2.30pm:       Talk: guest author on structuring your story
  • 3.15pm:       Tea/coffee break
  • 3.30pm:       Talk: nuts and bolts and practical tips
  • 4.15pm:       Questions
